How to Find a Job After College

How to Find a Job After College Congratulations, you did it!You just graduated (or are soon to be graduating) from college. This will be the greatest accomplishment of your life ...so far, anyway!Unfortunately, it is time to get back to work, which means finding a job.Landing a job after college is not an easy task. Ideally, you already have internships and years of relevant work experience under your belt. But let’s be honest, doing well in college is tough enough as it is.It’s even harder to find a job in your desired industry while balancing life as a full-time student.Believe it or not, less than one-third of university graduates have a job secured upon graduation. We want to help! So, we have laid out a “How To Find a Job After College” guide below. These points will show you how to optimize your efforts to find a job after graduating from college, regardless of your work experience.Optimize Your Relevant ExperienceWhether you partied every day or struggled to keep your grades up, the fact is, you graduated !That expensive piece of paper hanging on your wall serves as the symbol to bettering your career path and finding a job after college. You may not have made all the ideal career choices during your schooling. However, there are a few ways to enhance your job-hunting skills now.Increase your chanceof receiving callbacks. As you fill out job applications, remember:You must be able to translate all relevantexperience. This includes experience from your classwork. It also includes any volunteer work you have done. Hiring managers only look at what is relevant to the job you are applying for. In other words, unless you are applying to become a caregiver, don’t include the years you babysat a younger sibling. (Want to learn how to find your niche without a single day of work experience? Read more tips on How to Apply for Entry Level Jobs.)Solidify Your ResumeAt this point, you’re probably saying, “I know I need a strong resume in order to find a job after college!”Unfortunately, “ strong” is a relative term.If the quality of your resume doesn't match that of other candidates, you will likely get left behind in your job search.Research the lingo and business terms of your desired industry. Companies use scanning programs to filter out irrelevant resumes. If your wording is not strategically chosen, the hiring committee will not even look at your resume. Make sure the details in your resume fit what they seek in a candidate. If you have been on a campaign for finding a job after college and have not received any response, perhaps it is time to fix what is broken!Still feeling overwhelmed? Our services may increase your chances of job success.Take a look at Find My Profession's resume writingservices.(To learnHow To Write a Professional Resume on your own, click the link.)Be Open to All OpportunitiesAs a new college graduate, you might feel on top of the world.I don't want to be the one to break it to you, but someone needs to say it: the world owes you nothing! You have to go out and find a job after college; it will not be handed to you on a silver platter. All cliches aside, some new grads expect to get offered asix-figure salary job.You must be realistic in your job search.Don’t assume you are above an assistant position Your best fit might be a job that requires no experience. This is a long-term process. You will progress in your experience (and salary), but it takes time. But be encouraged, because you will not regret starting at the bottom of the right job opportunity.Use All Available AvenuesThere are many resources at your disposal to find a job after college, souse them all to increase your chances of being noticed by hiring managers. You are at a severe disadvantage if you only use one avenue to apply for jobs. These options include:Job boards Company websites Staffing agencies The career center at your universityWe won't spend time debating on which option is best...becauseyou should be using ALL of them! The more you explore your options, the better your chances get of landing that dream job after college.(To learn exactly where to apply for jobs, take a look at Where to Apply for Jobs Online.)Avoid Common MistakesAt this point, you should have a general idea of the etiquette and unwritten rules of the job search process after college, but I would like to emphasize a few key mistakes that are easy to correct.1. Assuming SuccessLike I stated above, it is best to be open to all opportunities after graduation.Do not show up for an interview assuming you have the job “in the bag.”Confidence is great, but arrogance is easy to pick up on.In fact, ahiring manager is trained to sniff out these types of candidates.Treat all employees at the company you are interviewing with respect.2. Refusing to Consider RelocatingIt is also important to be open to relocation. You do not want to miss out on a great job after collegebecause it is a short plane flight from family and friends.Eventually, you can be pickier about lo cation, but currently limiting your job options because of location can prove detrimental to your long-term goals.Change can be scary, but so can unemployment!3. Failing to Follow UpFollow-up contact is also very important. It shows you have determination towards the potential opportunity. It can be as simple as sending a “thank you” email to the hiring manager/interviewer.Thanking them for their time can speak volumes about the character of a candidate.Final Thoughts on Finding a Job After CollegeMost important of all, do your homework.Yes, you might be done with school;this does not mean you are done learning.Do not let your ego get in the way of your job search. Don’t assume your resume or cover letter is rock solid. There is nothing wrong with admitting you do not know everything about an industry or desired skill. Take advantage of the numerous resources at your disposal. If you are not getting callbacks, there are reasons for this. After all, you are entry-level as you look for a job after college, but we all have to start somewhere, right?Let a Professional Help You Find a JobIf you need help landing a job after graduation, here at Find My Profession, we would love to help.We have dedicated writers who specialize in all levels of resumes - including entry-level for recent graduates, socontact us today.Find My Profession has more than 150 5-star reviews on trusted third-party sites. Mentors and Getting Closer to Our Real Marla Gottschalk

Mentors and Getting Closer to Our Real Marla Gottschalk This morning as I drank my coffee, I listened to Eddie Vedder singing Elderly Woman Behind The Counter in a Small Town. It is a haunting melody about life and thoughts and the passage of time. As my husband passed by, the music caught his attention. Whos singing?, he asked. Pearl Jam, I said. I thought that was Eddie Vedder, he replied. Such a great vocalist, its a shame he is so studioized. Of course, he was joking â€" as Vedder was essentially performing alone with his guitar. But this led me to think about how we present ourselves everyday in the workplace. Are we studioized? With all of the talk about authenticity and transparency, are we really real? How does this affect our forward progress? In the course of my work, I concentrate on the stories of work life and career. Of course I believe that work is an integral component of an individuals life, but the process of finding the best path is often wrought with challenges and emotions. However, when you get to the core of it all, work is all about reaching your potential and hoping to find a bit of fulfillment there. In my opinion, the best part of work â€" is when the real you is at the root of success. How do we become a closer representation of our real selves at work? This seems like a complicated question â€" yet it might be surprisingly simple to answer; Admit to being human and find a guide. Seek a mentor â€" an advocate â€" a sounding board. An individual that will help you explore both your strengths and weaknesses, and inch closer to that real you. I am a great believer in mentoring. Mentoring can open our minds and envision who we can be, and what we can accomplish. So, I recommend looking for that mentor with great conviction. Use all of the tools available to you, to find that individual. Expose them to the individual you would really like to become at work. Learn to listen to the inner voice that directs you to points unknown, and explore those thoughts with a mentor. Through this process, we might learn to trust, our single, toughest critic â€" ourselves. Dr. Marla Gottschalk is a Workplace Psychologist. You can also find her on Twitter and Linkedin.

On the Job by Anita Bruzzese Could Being Conscientious Make Unemployment Worse

On the Job by Anita Bruzzese Could Being Conscientious Make Unemployment Worse In my family, if you weren't working, it had better be because you were dead or at least unconscious in a ditch somewhere. That's why when I started contemplating what it would be like to go without work for more than a year, I could hardly wrap my head around it. I once was unemployed for eight days, and I think I cried for six of them. I just felt like my whole identity had been taken away from me, and I felt so lost and worthless.I've interviewed a lot of people in the last year who have been unemployed for a lot longer than eight days. How, I wondered, do they cope? Here's the story I did for Gannett/USAToday.com:Most job seekers are optimistic when they first land in the unemployment line. They believe they have valuable skills and enough contacts theyll soon land on their feet. But as the days stretch into weeks then into months keeping that optimism alive almost becomes more difficult than finding work. The numbers are daunting: Its estimated that nearly 46 percent of the unemployed American workforce has been jobless for six months the highest figure since the Labor Department started tracking such numbers in 1948. In the U.S., seven million people have been looking for jobs for 27 weeks or more, with the majority 4.7 million jobless for 12 months or more. One of those long-term unemployed is Dustin Lewis, who lost his full-time job with Nike Inc. last April. Since then, its been a daily job to find a job. This has definitely been a gut-check, says Lewis, 25, of Portland, Ore. I try to look at this in a positive light, like the fact that Ive sharpened my skills by writing and marketing myself online. But every once in a while, there is a day when Im deflated emotionally. A new study from the University of Warwick called The Dark Side of Conscientiousness finds that such long-term unemployment may be even more difficult for individuals who are conscientious. The study says these people who view achievement in life as critical may find joble ssness much more threatening. One of the researchers, Christopher J. Boyce, says the four-year study of 9,570 individuals found that those who were conscientious had a much more difficult time as their jobless status stretched on. Specifically, those who had been without a job for three years were 120 percent more likely to have a drop in life satisfaction than others in the study. Not having a job in your life is quite detrimental, Boyce says. It can be a psychologically damaging event. He says that while conscientiousness is often thought of as a valuable trait, those who are unemployed and have such tendencies struggle to cope. For example, not having a job prevents them from achieving a key goal in their lives wealth accumulation, he says. Initially, we were quite surprised by the findings. But among our discoveries was that conscientious individuals also may evaluate that their lack of employment is due to a lack of ability, Boyce says. Boyce says those taking long-ter m unemployment especially hard such as the conscientious individuals in his study should find extra support. He also urges people to use unemployment as a chance to re-evaluate your life and find purpose. While Lewis was not part of Boyces study and says he wouldnt necessarily call himself a conscientious person, he says he understands how hunting for work for months on end can impact all areas of your life. Thats why he says that while he spends much of his day trying to find employment or an internship, he also takes time to volunteer for a literacy program at an elementary school. The volunteer work helps me a lot. Its a nice break. It gets my mind off the job search, and its a way to contribute, he says. Such a strategy is one that Boyce recommends. He says that job seekers can benefit from finding something to keep them occupied during unemployment, whether its volunteering, networking or helping their family. They need something where they can direct their skills, he say s. Lewis says that in the beginning of his unemployment, armed with a severance package, he wasnt overly concerned about finding work. Now that the severance money is gone, he tries to stay focused on finding a job. He lives with his mom since hes without a paycheck, and says her moral support and professional advice are valuable. While he has a college degree in business and marketing, he is expanding his job search into other areas, such as advertising. There are definitely days when I feel like I get a lot done; Ill find a job resource or apply for a job, he says. Then, there are other days when I dont feel like Im doing as much. I just try to spend a majority of my day doing things that will advance my job search. I treat my day hours just as I would my full-time job. Looking for work is a full-time job. What are some job search tips for the long-term unemployed?Social Bookmarking

A Resume Service Review Will Show You What to Expect

A Resume Service Review Will Show You What to ExpectIf you are tired of reading job descriptions and letters and need some direction, a good way to find the best resume writing services is to read an expert resume writing services review. A resume service review will give you a good idea about what you should expect when it comes to a particular firm and whether or not they meet your expectations. Good reviews can also give you important information such as questions to ask, additional information about their past services, and any negative feedbacks you should watch out for.Do you know that finding the best resume writing services can be quite a hassle? Many people complain that there are so many service providers that they can't find one that is truly outstanding. However, it is possible to get a good one if you pay attention to a few things. Before looking at the details of a resume service review, it is important to establish what type of information you want from your professiona l document. You should know what your goals are and how you want your resume to look. For example, do you want to emphasize your work experience? What kind of goals do you have in mind? Do you want a more professional-looking resume or a more generic resume to appear professional in front of the people you interview?Does your main goal in applying for jobs is to land a full-time employment or a part-time one? How much do you need to bring in to earn a living? These are all very important questions to ask yourself. If you are looking for part-time employment or short-term work, you should be able to find a good service provider who can provide you with details about what kinds of jobs they can supply you with. If you are looking for full-time employment, you should check for service providers that can supply you with a more specific list of jobs that you need to apply for.Once you have decided on a resume service that meets your needs, you should also make sure that the writers they u se are talented and professional. They should have wide experience in the field and be very skilled in their craft. A good resume service should have all of the details that you need and should be able to provide the right documents to suit your specific needs. Just like any other service providers, you should have the comfort of knowing that you will be getting a high quality product that you can be proud of.In addition, some services offer a free trial period that you can try before committing. There are some which offer you a free trial to test the validity of their service by sending them samples of your work. This means that you will be surprised how well they work if you opt for the free trial. The only downside is that you will have to pay upfront for the service so it may be costly but it is a risk worth taking in order to get exactly what you want in the end.No matter how long you have been searching for a professional, on-line service, a resume writing service review will definitely help you narrow down your choices. It will tell you what the best ones are without any hassle. Even if you decide to choose the most expensive, the best will still be worth it.

Are Employers Spying on You with Facebook - CareerEnlightenment.com

My Conclusionless ConclusionOkay, dont be disappointed that there arent clear answers but there are useful things to learn here:First, we know that despite HR regulation, the temptation of checking out a candidate on Facebook is too great to resist. Though its anecdotal evidence, its still evidence that you should assume that whatever you post publicly on Facebook will become part of your job application. So lock that s**t down. Go over your privacy settings with a fine-tooth comb.Second, if employers are asking recruiters not to friend job prospects, you know that they are doing just that or the employers wouldnt have to ask. Which means that when you are networking or at career fairs and the recruiter friends you, be extra careful. Once they are your friend, they can see everything youve got online. All that work you did locking down your privacy settings no longer means much.Consider creating a group called limited access, with no access to your wall, and putting the recruiters in that group. Then you dont have to offend anyone by ignoring their request, and you also dont have to worry about privacy because their access is restricted. Finally, companies are still ambiguously using Facebook to recruit. It seems their primary motivation is to simply reserve their name so that rogue employees dont make a mess of things. So even though there may be a Fanpage of your target company, dont expect it to be monitored by decision makers. Theyre probably reluctantly keeping that thing alive. If you have a Facebook story with your own job search, I would love to hear about it. Please share it below and Ill be sure to respond.
